Accessibility statement for BFI Replay

This accessibility statement applies to the BFI Replay website.

Our aims

The BFI is committed to making this website useful for everyone.

We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 to improve the accessibility of our pages. There are 3 levels of accessibility: A, AA and AAA.

We work towards being AA compliant. At present we have partially met these criteria and continue to work towards achieving full AA across the site.

This website is run by the British Film Institute (BFI). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts via browser or plugin
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver

We've also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the 'accessibility regulations'). If you're not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website's accessibility

The British Film Institute is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is not compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard. The non-compliances and exemptions are listed below.

Non-accessible content

Some of our pre-recorded videos lack synchronised captions, so users who are deaf or hard of hearing may not be able to understand the video content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.2 Captions (Pre-Recorded).

Some of our pre-recorded videos lack any options for text transcript or audio description track, so users who are blind or cannot understand the visual content cannot have it described. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded).

Some of our pre-recorded videos do not have any options for alternative audio tracks such as audio description, so users who cannot see or understand the visual content cannot have it described. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.5 Audio Description (prerecorded).

Some page content overlaps and becomes difficult to read when zooming text only. Users who require larger text may not be able to see some of the content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.4 Resize Text.

At 400% zoom level on smaller viewports the map page, content renders off-screen, and the 'Search' input becomes inaccessible, so users who require larger text may not be able to see some of it or search the site. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.10 Reflow.

When navigating using Dragon Naturally Speaking (speech recognition software), users are unable to fully interact with the 'Video' and 'Map' pages. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value.

Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Video published before 2020

Archive video content is essential to this website, so we have videos that were published before September 2020.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix pre-recorded time-based media that was published before September 2020 as the content was produced before that date. For example, we do not plan to fix the videos included in the Emmerdale collection.

Any pre-recorded video or audio content produced after September 2020 that we publish will meet accessibility standards.
